ACFE: Making Learning Click: Neurodivergent Learner Needs in Learn Local classrooms

This practical session explores inclusive teaching approaches that help reduce barriers to participation, increase learner confidence and support achievement across a range of learning goals. Drawing on Universal Design for Learning (UDL), adult learning principles and evidence-informed practice.

Description

Learn Local classrooms bring together adult learners with diverse strengths, experiences, and learning needs. Neurodivergent learners, including those with ADHD, autism, dyslexia, and other cognitive differences, often bring valuable perspectives, creativity and problem-solving skills that enrich learning environments. This practical session explores inclusive teaching approaches that help reduce barriers to participation, increase learner confidence and support achievement across a range of learning goals. Drawing on Universal Design for Learning (UDL), adult learning principles and evidence-informed practice, participants will discover strategies that make learning more accessible, engaging, and meaningful for all learners while supporting the development of employability skills such as communication, collaboration, adaptability, and problem-solving.

Learning Outcomes

  • Describe the characteristics, strengths and learning preferences commonly associated with neurodivergent adult learners.
  • Apply strategies to reduce cognitive load and improve learner engagement, focus and understanding.
  • Use Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles to create flexible and inclusive learning experiences that support diverse learner needs.
  • Embed employability skills such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and adaptability into inclusive learning activities.
  • Use professional judgement to identify learner strengths and barriers and make appropriate adjustments to teaching practice.
  • Implement practical tools, resources and teaching strategies that increase accessibility, participation, and learner success.
