Family Violence Program - Transformative Learning

Description

Transformative learning occurs when new and disorientating information and experiences cause a person to reflect on their assumptions, perspectives and attitudes contributing to the experience it and make sense of the information. This can lead to new thinking about the experience and changes in how they go about their practice.

The transformative process happens when a person experiences a disequilibrium or cognitive dissonance due to new ideas, information, points of view or experiences and then questions the information by questioning what they are learning through discussions with people with other points of view about family violence and by and reflecting on the limitations of their current views in light of this information. The person then considers actions and relationships based on new views and then practices and implements them

Topics covered:

  • The theory of transformative learning by Mezirow.
  • How the theory can be applied in family violence training.
  • Creating opportunities for learning and discussion.
  • Reflection discussions exploring the complexity of how to apply professional knowledge and skills in family violence training.
  • Reflection discussions unpacking the associated triggers for students and staff.
