In-Person Workshop: Validation Excellence: A Full-Day Masterclass for VET Practitioners
Validation Excellence is a hands-on masterclass for VET practitioners that reframes validation from compliance to quality improvement. Participants will learn the end-to-end validation cycle, risk-based scheduling, team selection, and sampling. Through exercises and a mock validation, they build skills to evaluate assessments, document findings, and drive continuous improvement in RTO outcomes.
Description
Validation Excellence: A Full-Day Masterclass for VET Practitioners is a practical, hands-on workshop designed to help RTOs move beyond validation as a compliance activity and use it as a meaningful tool for improving assessment quality, consistency and learner outcomes.
Across the full day, participants will explore the complete validation cycle in detail, from planning and preparation through to conducting validation, recording outcomes and using findings for continuous improvement. The masterclass will examine how to develop a risk-based validation schedule, including how to prioritise training products, identify higher-risk areas, and ensure validation activity is purposeful, manageable and aligned to the RTO’s broader quality assurance approach.
Participants will also consider how to select the right validation team, including the role of trainers and assessors, industry representatives, independent reviewers and compliance or academic leaders. The session will unpack how to get the sample right, including practical considerations for sample size, assessment evidence, completed student work, assessment tools and assessor judgements.
A key feature of the workshop is its focus on getting into the “weeds” of validation: what to look for, what questions to ask, how to test assessment tools against the requirements of the training product, and how to make sound judgements about validity, reliability, fairness and sufficiency. Rather than staying at a high-level overview, the session will work through the practical details that often determine whether validation is genuinely useful or simply a paperwork exercise.
The day will also include a full mock validation activity, giving participants the opportunity to apply the concepts in a realistic and supported environment. Participants will be encouraged to bring examples of their own assessment tools or validation materials, should they wish to use them during the practical activities. Through guided exercises, group discussion and applied review, participants will strengthen their confidence in identifying issues, documenting findings and translating outcomes into meaningful improvement actions.
This masterclass is ideal for trainers, assessors, validation leads, compliance staff, academic managers and RTO leaders who want a deeper, more practical understanding of validation. Participants will leave with clearer strategies, practical tools and greater confidence to plan, conduct and improve validation within their own RTO context.
