Webinar: Building Better Observation Checklists for VET Assessment
The session will explore what makes an observation checklist effective in the VET context, including how to align observable criteria to the requirements of the unit of competency, performance evidence, assessment conditions and expected workplace performance
Description
Building Better Observation Checklists for VET Assessment is a practical webinar designed to help RTOs develop observation tools that are compliant, usable and fit for real assessment practice.
The session will explore what makes an observation checklist effective in the VET context, including how to align observable criteria to the requirements of the unit of competency, performance evidence, assessment conditions and expected workplace performance. Participants will consider how observation tools can support valid and consistent assessment judgements while also providing clear evidence that assessment has been conducted appropriately.
A key focus of the webinar will be designing observation tools that trainers and assessors will actually use in practice. The session will examine how to make checklists clear, efficient and easy to complete, without oversimplifying the evidence requirements or turning the tool into a tick-and-flick exercise. Participants will explore practical ways to improve instructions, performance descriptors, assessor prompts, evidence notes and decision-making guidance.
The webinar will also consider how technology can make observation more efficient and reliable, including digital forms, mobile-friendly tools, evidence capture, workflow tracking and centralised recordkeeping. Participants will explore how digital solutions can reduce administrative burden while improving consistency, visibility and evidence quality.
The session will also address important considerations for third-party observations, including when they may be appropriate, how to guide workplace supervisors or third-party observers, what evidence they can reasonably provide, and how assessors retain responsibility for the final assessment judgement.
By the end of the webinar, participants will have a clearer understanding of how to design observation checklists that meet compliance expectations, support assessors in practice, and generate useful evidence for high-quality VET assessment.
